Oakpress Studio Is SEO worth it?
Is it worth paying for SEO?
For most local businesses, yes, if people search for what you do in your town and one customer is worth a fair amount. It isn’t worth a long contract with vague reports. Start with a free Found Check; the Search Fix is £149, and Grow is £99 a month with no contract.

Is SEO worth it for a small business?
Usually, yes, when two things are true: people search Google for what you do in your town, and one new customer is worth a good amount to you. A roofer, a physio, a driveway firm or a wedding photographer can win back a year of SEO with a single job. It’s rarely worth it when it means a long contract, a vague monthly report and nobody able to tell you what actually changed.
The cost of skipping it is quieter. When someone in Middlesbrough or Stockton searches “[what you do] near me”, most of them ring one of the first few businesses on the map. If that isn’t you, the call goes elsewhere, and you never hear about it.
What you’re actually paying for
For a local business, good SEO is mostly unglamorous work done properly. With me it’s this, written down before you pay:
- Your Google Business Profile in the right category, with services, hours, photos and a description that says what you do and where.
- Your listings (Bing, Yell and the rest) with the same name, phone and hours everywhere.
- Your website saying your service and town in plain words on each page, with titles, schema and FAQ answers Google and AI tools can read.
- Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools set up in your name, so Google and Bing know the site is there.
- Reviews: a one-tap Google review link and a QR card, so happy customers actually leave one.
- AI answers: a check of what ChatGPT says when asked for your trade in your town.
Not sure where your gaps are? See why a business doesn’t show on Google, or let me check for you.
When it isn’t worth paying for
- Promises of first place. Nobody can promise a position on Google, and anyone who does is guessing. Google says you can’t pay it for a better local ranking.
- Long lock-ins. Agency SEO is often several hundred pounds a month on a 6 or 12 month contract. If you can’t leave when it isn’t working, the risk is all yours.
- Reports full of searches nobody types. Ranking for an odd phrase isn’t the point. Calls, bookings and enquiries are.
- No website for it to work on. If you only have Facebook, the website is usually the bigger fix. See do I need a website? and what a website costs.
What I find when I check Teesside businesses
Most of the businesses I check aren’t short of good reviews. They’re short of the basics Google reads: a website of their own, the right category, matching details. That’s why a business with 5 stars can sit outside the Maps top 5 in its own town. The numbers are on my SEO Middlesbrough page, all from searches I made myself in October 2026.
What SEO costs with me
I’m Jack, a web designer and local SEO from Eston. No long contracts:

Is SEO worth it for a small business?
Usually, when people search for what you do in your town and one customer is worth a fair amount to you. Trades, clinics and wedding businesses often win the cost back with a single job. It’s rarely worth it on a long contract where nobody can show you what changed.
How much does SEO cost for a small business in the UK?
Agency SEO is often several hundred pounds a month, usually on a 6 or 12 month contract. Local businesses can start smaller: my Search Fix is £149 one-off, done in 5 days, and Grow is £99 a month with no contract, so you can stop if it isn’t paying its way.
How long does SEO take to work?
Fixes to your Google Business Profile and listings can move you on the map within weeks. Climbing the normal search results usually takes 6 to 12 months, because Google builds trust slowly. A good SEO shows you a before-and-after from your own town, not a promise of first place.
Can I do SEO myself instead?
You can, if you have the time. Most owners don’t, and small mistakes, like changing a category the wrong way or creating a second listing, can push a business further down. The free Found Check shows what needs doing, so you can decide whether to do it yourself or have it done.
Is SEO a scam?
No, but some sellers are. Be wary of anyone promising first place, locking you into a long contract or sending reports full of searches nobody types. Real local SEO is plain work you can check: your profile, listings, website words and reviews, measured in calls and enquiries.
